The additional train will be in service from Monday, December 8, 2025, through Sunday, January 5, 2026. This period usually records some of the highest passenger movements on the Standard Gauge Railway, with Nairobi and Mombasa being the main points of interest for many travellers.

Kenya Railways has moved to adjust its operations ahead of the December holidays by releasing a fresh timetable that adds another Madaraka Express passenger train. The operator said the extra service was planned to match the sharp rise in bookings normally seen as families, visitors and holidaymakers travel to and from the Coast.

The additional train will be in service from Monday, December 8, 2025, through Sunday, January 5, 2026. This period usually records some of the highest passenger movements on the Standard Gauge Railway, with Nairobi and Mombasa being the main points of interest for many travellers.

In a notice dated December 2, Kenya Railways said, “We are committed to providing a safe and convenient travel experience, and the additional services will help ease congestion while maintaining punctuality.” Officials said the move is aimed at preventing delays and giving travellers more options during the busy season.

The new Nairobi-to-Mombasa trip will set off from the capital at 09:40hrs. It will stop in Voi at 13:35hrs, leave again at 13:40hrs and complete the journey in Mombasa at 15:35hrs.

For those heading back to Nairobi, the return train will start from Mombasa at 16:30hrs, reach Voi at 18:15hrs, leave at 18:20hrs and arrive in Nairobi at 22:55hrs.

Kenya Railways has also encouraged early reservations, saying passengers can buy tickets through www.metickets.co.ke, the *639# USSD code or by visiting SGR stations across the country.

“We advise passengers to book early to avoid last-minute disappointments, especially during this peak travel period,” the notice stated.

The operator said the extra service fits into ongoing work to improve the Madaraka Express experience and respond to increasing demand, especially during holiday seasons.

Many travellers now prefer the train because of its comfort, safety and steady timetable, along with the wide views the route offers.

As part of its advisory, Kenya Railways reminded passengers to carry valid identification and arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. The operator said safety procedures will be followed throughout the festive period to ensure smooth operations.

The announcement comes months after President William Ruto unveiled the Mombasa rail service that links the city’s Central Business District with the SGR terminus in Miritini.

The commuter line has stops at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, Mazeras and the Mombasa CBD.

Kenya Railways expects the line to move up to 4,000 passengers every day, easing pressure on the city’s roads and offering travellers a cheaper and faster alternative.
